The year is 1939. War breaks out and paralyzes Europe, including Sweden. Gerd Osten is a prominent film critic (writing under the pseudonym Pavane) and a public intellectual. She works tirelessly, striving to realize her dream — to make films. Inspired by Europe, she aims to break boundaries and create something new. On the periphery is her daughter.
Suzanne Osten’s debut film is based on her mother’s diaries from 1939–1944. It tells the story of a Sweden living in the shadow of war and of the situation for women in the 1940s, with questions that remain relevant today. Gerd fights to be a creative individual in a patriarchal society and tries to balance her professional life with motherhood. More than anything, she wants to make films, but the film industry is dominated by older men who decide who gets a chance. For film enthusiasts, it is especially interesting to see the portrayals of the film moguls, particularly Ingmar Bergman.

A Season of Classic Films
För tredje gången deltar Svenska Filminstitutet i den europeiska filmarkivfederationen ACE:s (Association des Cinémathèques Européennes) satsning A Season of Classic Films, där varje arkiv inbjuds att välja ut en film som sedan görs tillgänglig för biografvisning och strömning.
2024 deltar 24 filmarvsinstitutioner från 20 länder, och Filminstitutets bidrag är den digitalt nyrestaurerade Ingmarsarvet från 1925 av Gustaf Molander. Filmen finns tillgänglig med engelska och franska undertexter här på Filmarkivet.se, med nyskriven musik komponerad och framförd av Matti Bye.
Tidigare år har filmer som Fången på Karlstens fästning (1916) och Med ackja och ren i Inka Läntas vinterland (1926) valts ut. Dessa filmer finns också med engelska och franska undertexter.
